Imagine an opaque world devoid of light, what do you think would be the fate of lives in the world?
The answer is simple; the world would be lifeless. Light is so essential to our day to day life, and its importance cannot be overemphasised. The ubiquitous nature of light is not restricted to Earth alone; it also stretches to the cosmic world. There have been various developments in science and technology which have enhanced our understanding of how we view the cosmos and the role the cosmic light plays.
According to Einstein’s relativity theory of 1915 which was one of the foremost developments on cosmology, light is the principal foundation upon which space and time are built. This theory revolves around the idea of light and the role the cosmic light played in the development of this theory which made the theory recognised worldwide. This happened when the study of light deflection caused by the sun was carried out. The light was also employed in the development of the gravitational redshift theory. The role light played in general relativity is very important. Another significant role played by the cosmic light and relativity can be found in the Global Positioning System (GPS) Device. It is useful in accurately placing our location due to the combination of light and relativity effect. Again, mapping and the study of geometry is made possible because of the cosmic light. This is achievable as a result of the gravitational redshift which originates from the supernovae and the galaxies of stars which are viable materials to carry out the study and mapping. Due to this, we are able to know that the galaxies are now getting further apart, that the cosmos is expanding. It is also this exercise that we discovered that there is new energy which has been dark energy in the cosmos.
In the study of cosmic light in relations to relativity, it was also scientifically proven that our world came into existence as a result of a Big Bang. The Big Bang theory is an electromagnetic shockwave origin of the cosmos. It is also called Cosmic Microwave Background(CMB). The cosmic light is a beauty to behold; you can also witness its grandeur with the use of the Galileoscope. With the Galileoscope, regardless of where you reside around the earth surface, you would be able to see the cosmic universe and the firmaments. It is quite sad that beautiful celestial lights and the sky have been dealt a terrible blow due to various light pollution. Light pollution will occur when many synthetic or artificial lights such as lighted sign boards, streetlights, improperly fitted floodlights, among others interfere with the natural lighting and ecosystem. Due to this interference, the number of galaxies is reduced, and they become invisible to the eyes. All these astonishing discoveries would not have happened without the aid of the cosmic light. It is the responsibility of you and me to preserve the ecosystem from environmental degradation, and we can do this by avoiding excessive artificial lighting.
